Ohio Republican's held a super majority going into our redistricting process forcing us to vote with Unconstitutional Maps that broke our community into two. These maps were struck down several times and they ran out the clock. We must hold their feet to the flame and force them to provide Ohioans with Fair Maps that over 70% of Ohioans voted for.

As we move forward trying to find ways to make an impact on gun violence, inequality, corruption, discrimination that is plaguing our nation and the blatant disregard of the needs of the majority for the obscure wants of the minority. Please know that we can have the greatest impact when we participate in our local and state government. We hope to help you learn so much about the bills as they are being written by outside groups and funded by those who stand to profit the most.

However, there are larger organizations that are focused on these types of bills specifically and we suggest that you sign up for their newsletters and emails if this is a passionate topic for you. They will host virtual events to help educate you on the specifics of the bills, help you with your written testimony, invite you to in person events and alert you when testimony could be required giving you a bit more time to prepare. We have been working with a few of these organizations closely as individuals and have worked with some of them as an organization. So please feel confident in pursuing the links we share with you, if we have not worked with an organization we will post a disclaimer,

Clark County Democratic Women’s Issues Network (WIN) Leadership

We are currently working with Protect Choice Ohio collecting signatures to put healthcare on this November's ballot.

Abortions are currently LEGAL in the state of Ohio but it is under constant attack. Two organizations have come together to write the language for a ballot initiative that would let us protect reproductive freedom in Ohio. This includes rights to contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one's own pregnancy, miscarriage care and abortion. We have petitions readily available to sign. You can contact us and we will help direct you to the nearest event if you are outside our area.
We only need to look towards other states to see the severe measures that they are taking to see what type of legislation will make it's way to Ohio. This petition will allow all registered voters of Ohio to voice their opinion on your life, the life of your children, the life of your extended family and the life of your friends or co workers. The republicans are taking drastic measures increasing the overall number of votes required to pass all citizen led ballot initiative from 50% to 60%. We cannot express how important it is that you vote this November.

The Ohio State legislators are currently working towards passing their own version of Florida's Don't Say Gay Bill, Ohio House Bill 616.

What is different about this bill is that it also includes language that prohibits teaching an accurate version of American history. CRT has become the dog whistle of the right wing GOP. To be clear Critical Race Theory is only taught at the college level but is has not stopped bills like these from gaining traction.

House Bill 616, is anti progressive. It is a bill that would prevent educators from teaching about tolerance and acceptance. Environments in which a child fails to feel accepted or understood leads to increase in a dramatic increase of self harm  and suicide. This bill feeds the fear of the easily swayed using words like indoctrination and pedophilia.

We have trusted our educators for decades, we need to trust them now as they are coming out in large numbers to oppose bill after bill.

Are you intimidated when someone asks you to write or give in person testimony?

Women's Issues Network came together with Rachel Coyle, communications director of Innovation Ohio to host a workshop to help reduce those fears by improving our skills and answering our questions.

Rachel provided our members with a step by step power point presentation that was extremely informative and easy to follow. After the presentation she answered our questions and assisted one member with their practice testimony. Even though our member stumbled over their testimony Rachel was quite helpful at getting them back on track.

Please check out our Testimony Workshop page for the video clips and other helpful tips.

Still looking for a little  more help to get comfortable with  your testimony? We at WIN are here to provide you with credible links to articles to learn more about the legislation that is striping away our rights as well as the rights of others. We need to remember just how powerful our voices truly are.

Check out Jessica Craven's site Chop Wood, Carry Water. If you subscribe to her emails she will provide you with a script of what to say when you call your legislator.

Women's Issues Network hosted community conversations about gun violence.

We invited local law enforcement, local organizations, our city's mayor, Clark County’s newly formed Law Enforcement Advisory Team has given the public their first look into the team’s three areas of focus — community complaints, implicit bias training, education and outreach.

Our first forum focused on getting familiar with the oversight teams, local organizations and community leaders. The guests asked hard questions of all of our participants that helped us realize that one forum would not meet the needs of our community.

Kristine Woodworth, a volunteer with Moms Demand Action in Ohio, spoke to us about the dangerous gun legislation that was making its way through the Ohio Statehouse. A constitutional carry legislation was unfortunately passed and signed into law March 14th of this year.

After listening to the guests concerns we decided to focus our next forum more closely on the Clark County Law Enforcement Advisory Team (CCLEAT) and their findings thus far. They discussed with us their suggestions to build trust in the community and shared similar aspirations as our local sheriff.

Throughout this forum a continued topic that deserves more attention is the need for more mental health assistance within the community. Sheriff Burchett discussed how nearly half of all inmates are in need for some type of mental health assistance while they are incarcerated.

Our next forum is intended to focus on the mental health needs of the victims and survivors of gun violence within Clark County.
