Stacey Abrams Event

On March 9th, WIN Members Melinda B, Pam R. and Crystal G. attended an event at the historic Hilton Netherland Plaza hotel in Cincinnati where Stacey Abrams was the keynote speaker. This national landmark venue was the perfect setting to meet a woman that is busy making history herself! Stacey is probably best known for her tireless work in Georgia to turn out the vote for Joe Biden in 2020. This helped turn the tide of the election.

Unlike Donald Trump’s unfounded claims that the presidential election was “rigged,” Stacey did not whine about losing her bid for Georgia Governor. After losing the election, Stacey Abrams channeled her energy into finding a solution for educating voters and training voter protection teams. She mentored grassroots activists and supported litigation to protect voters rights. Her program has been replicated in many other communities in order to increase voter turnout and prevent voter suppression.

Stacey Abrams spoke passionately about her devotion to learning and service. Her energy is boundless. She is a New York Times bestselling author, former Georgia House of Representatives minority leader, and founder of Fair Fight. She encouraged us to speak to people who ordinarily might not be heard and to ask how we can help them. Don’t wait for someone else to stand up for justice.  She left us with one challenge: “Speak Up, Stand Up and Show Up!”

No celebration of Women’s History Month would be complete without recognizing women who are making history right now. Stacey Abrams is at the forefront of that league.

(NOTE: Special thanks to WIN member Ruth Lawson for extending the invitation to attend this event.)
